Public Notification of the Methow Conservancy’s Application for Accreditation
by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission

Following on the incredible success of our Imagine the Methow Campaign for Conservation, one of our organizational goals for the current fiscal year is to earn the seal of accreditation from the National Land Trust Accreditation Commission.  We hope to join the approximately 130 land trusts nationwide who can proudly certify that they meet all the national standards and practices of a conservation organization that will endure forever.

The national accreditation process was implemented starting in 2006 with several years of 'piloting” of the program. It is now a respected measure of land trust integrity, and the Methow Conservancy has recently submitted a detailed application including information on our policies and procedures for addressing all aspects of our work as a land trust – from financial management, governance, and fundraising, to the technical and ethical aspects of working with private landowners to protect land.  The Methow Conservancy’s materials have been reviewed, and our organization has been invited to proceed with the preparation and submittal of a complete formal application for accreditation through the Land Trust Accreditation Commission.  The Methow Conservancy is one of 29 land trust organizations invited to participate in this accreditation round.

The Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent arm of the national Land Trust Alliance, will review our application this winter.  As a part of this process, a public comment period is now open.  We want to share information with you so that you can submit a comment if you would like.

The Commission invites public input and accepts signed, written comments on pending applications.  Comments must relate to how the Methow Conservancy complies with national quality standards.  These standards address the ethical and technical operation of a land trust.  For the full list of standards see www.landtrustaccreditation.org/tips-and-tools/indicator-practices

Comments on the Methow Conservancy’s application will be most helpful if received by January 2, 2012.  While comments received by the Commission must be attributed, your name may be withheld from us upon request.

As a land trust committed to the permanence of our land conservation efforts in the Methow Valley, we see the accreditation process as yet another way to ensure public trust in our conservation efforts. We hope that if you do have a comment on our efforts to inspire people to care for the land of the Methow Valley that you will take a moment to submit your thoughts to the Land Trust Accreditation Commission.

Thank You,

Board and Staff of the Methow Conservancy
